Solar Water Heating Product Upgrade

Solar Water Heater Capstone — IBM Product Management Certificate

The Brief

An IBM Product Management Certificate capstone set in an enterprise product scenario. The brief: define what an enterprise-grade ETAP solar water heating product would look like, from opportunity framing through to a prioritised MVP backlog, for fleet managers and large organisations facing rising energy costs.

What I Produced

Working through the IBM PM framework, I built five deliverables that cover the full early-stage PM workflow:

  1. Product Concept Document: defined the opportunity space, target segments, and core value proposition for an enterprise-grade ETAP system
  2. Product Vision: articulated the north star: enabling organisations to reduce facility energy costs by 30% through intelligent, managed solar thermal infrastructure
  3. Beta Plan: identified early adopter profiles (logistics companies, large hospitality groups), defined success metrics, and outlined a 90-day pilot structure
  4. Demand Generation Plan: mapped the B2B buyer journey from awareness to purchase, with channel and messaging recommendations for energy/facilities managers
  5. User Story Backlog: wrote and prioritised stories for the MVP, covering onboarding, real-time monitoring, reporting, and alert management

What I Learned

This capstone reinforced the discipline of working backwards from user needs to strategy, and forwards from strategy to backlog, without jumping to solutions. It sharpened my ability to frame product problems in terms of user value rather than features, and to structure a coherent product narrative across multiple deliverables.
